Why is the coating important? The sun provides the cleanest and most abundant form of energy available to us. More energy falls on the earth in the form of sunshine in one hour, than we can consume in an entire year. The challenge has been to harness the energy cost effectively. The development of highly selective receiver coatings that can operate at high temperatures of 750 °C will further reduce the cost of CSP electricity. Developing highly efficient, durable, air-stable receiver coatings capable of operating at high temperatures is a key enabler to reduce the cost of CSP electricity, as identified in industry and the U.S. Department of Energy roadmaps. Novel materials are being developed and expensive processes are being used which could prove cost prohibitive for commercial use. The VT approach is based on low-cost materials and scalable processes
